Saint Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin is remembered as one of the most courageous and influential Patriarchs of the Assyrian Church of the East. His leadership during one of the most difficult periods in Assyrian history, combined with his ultimate sacrifice, has secured his place as a martyr and spiritual hero of the Church.

Early Life and Patriarchal Calling
Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin was born in 1887 in the village of Qodchanis in the Hakkari region of the Ottoman Empire (modern-day southeastern Turkey). He came from the historic Shimun patriarchal line, a family that had long served the Church through generations of leadership.
At a young age, he was consecrated as a Metropolitan and, following the passing of his uncle, Patriarch Mar Shimun XVIII, he ascended to the patriarchal throne in 1903 at only 18 years old.
As Catholicos-Patriarch, he led the Church from its traditional seat in Qodchanis, guiding the faithful during a time of growing political instability in the region.
Leadership During War and Persecution
The patriarchate of Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin coincided with the outbreak of World War I and the tragic events that would become known as the Assyrian Genocide. During this period, Assyrian Christians faced widespread persecution, displacement, and violence.
In the face of these challenges, Mar Shimun emerged not only as a spiritual leader but also as a national figure, uniting Assyrian tribes and communities in defense of their people and faith. His leadership extended beyond ecclesiastical responsibilities, as he worked to secure protection and survival for his nation during a time of great suffering.

A Leader of Courage and Conviction
Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin is remembered for his strong resolve and commitment to his people. He refused to abandon his flock despite immense pressure and danger. His words and actions reflected a deep sense of responsibility—not only to the Church but also to the Assyrian nation as a whole.
His leadership helped preserve unity among the Assyrians during a time when external threats and internal hardships could have led to fragmentation.

Martyrdom
On March 18, 1918, Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin was assassinated in Salmas, Persia, by the Kurdish leader Simko Shikak under the pretense of peace negotiations. He was killed along with many of his companions and bodyguards.
His death was a devastating blow to the Assyrian people and the Church, occurring during one of the darkest chapters in their history. His martyrdom became a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and steadfast leadership in the face of persecution.

Legacy and Sainthood
Despite his short life, Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin left a profound and lasting legacy. He is remembered as a defender of the faith, a unifier of his people, and a martyr who gave his life for the Church.
His brother, Mar Shimun XX Paulos, succeeded him as Patriarch, continuing the leadership of the Church during a turbulent era.
Today, Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin is venerated as a saint in the Assyrian Church of the East. His life continues to inspire the faithful around the world, including the Assyrian Church of the East in Canada.

Conclusion
Saint Mar Shimun XIX Benyamin stands as a powerful example of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering faith. His leadership during one of the most difficult periods in Assyrian history and his ultimate martyrdom remind us of the strength and resilience of the Church and its people.
His memory lives on as a source of inspiration for future generations to remain steadfast in faith and united in purpose.
