Saint Mar Yosip Khnanisho remains one of the most revered hierarchs of the Assyrian Church of the East in the modern era. His long life of service, leadership during times of crisis, and unwavering dedication to the Church and the Assyrian people have secured his place among the great spiritual fathers of our history.

Early Life and Spiritual Formation
Mar Yosip Khnanisho was born in 1893 in the region of Hakkari (modern-day southeastern Turkey), into the distinguished Khnanisho family, from which many metropolitans had emerged. From an early age, he was dedicated to the service of the Church, following long-standing traditions of ecclesiastical succession within faithful families.
He was ordained a deacon at just 12 years old and later a priest in 1912. Recognized for his wisdom and spiritual maturity, he was consecrated a bishop in 1914 at the young age of 22, during a critical period marked by the upheavals of World War I.

Leadership During Hardship
The early years of Mar Yosip’s episcopacy coincided with immense suffering for the Assyrian people. During the displacement caused by war and persecution, he led many faithful to safety, demonstrating courage and pastoral care in times of crisis.
In 1918, he was appointed assistant to the Patriarch Mar Shimun XX Paulos and served as a key administrator of the Church. Following the Patriarch’s illness and passing in 1920, Mar Yosip played a central role in maintaining stability and continuity within the Church.

Metropolitan and Guardian of the Church
Mar Yosip Khnanisho served as the Metropolitan (Matran) of Shemsdin from 1918 until his passing in 1977—nearly six decades of continuous service. Throughout these years, he became a unifying figure for the Assyrian Church of the East, both spiritually and administratively.
In 1933, he was entrusted with the administration of the Church in Iraq and the Middle East. Later, in 1973, when the Patriarch Mar Shimun XXI Eshai was exiled, Mar Yosip assumed broader responsibility for overseeing the Church worldwide.
During this time, he was also officially recognized by the Iraqi government as the Supreme Head of the Assyrians in Iraq, reflecting both his spiritual authority and his leadership within the wider Assyrian community.

A Life of Service and Humility
Known for his humility, discipline, and deep spirituality, Mar Yosip devoted his life entirely to the Church. He ordained clergy, guided the faithful, and preserved the traditions of the East Syriac heritage during a century of immense change and displacement.
His leadership extended beyond ecclesiastical duties; he was a father figure to the Assyrian people, advocating for their well-being and preserving their identity during difficult times.

Passing and Legacy
Mar Yosip Khnanisho passed away on July 3, 1977, in Baghdad, Iraq. His funeral was attended by thousands of faithful, reflecting the profound impact he had on the Church and the nation.
His legacy continues through the generations of clergy he mentored, the faithful he guided, and the enduring strength of the Assyrian Church of the East. Churches and parishes around the world bear his name, honoring his memory and contributions.

Mar Yosip Khnanisho is venerated as a saint in the Assyrian Church of the East. His feast day is commemorated annually on the second Sunday of July, serving as a reminder of his holy life and faithful service.
